Clash of Clans is a free multiplayer game from Supercell. Released in 2012, it has become one of the most downloaded games in history, and has received positive reviews from industry stalwarts.

A real-time strategy game big on resource allocation, participants create complex villages through gaining resources by defeating both the creatures in the world of Clash of Clans, as well as other gamers, or they can buy gems anywhere from five to a hundred dollars via in-app purchases to further their participation in the game. The good

On the plus side, players can band together, building clans of up to fifty people who chat with each other, work together, and fight in Clan Wars together. People who play in the same clans end up as friends.

And the game is addicting enough when you play alone, (so darn hard to put that iPad down!) but it’s especially addicting since it is multiplayer—you get a strong sense of “clanaraderie” with those you fight in Clan Wars side by side with. Learning to develop strategies and all about managing resources is win-win, plus you get to review why you lost every time your clan is defeated—making your strategizing skills even better for the next bouts.

The bad

While downloading Clash of Clans is free on both iOS and Android, there are a number of in-app purchases that can be made for advancing your troops, defeating others and building your village.

Many folks play Clash of Clans without spending at all. But the lure of moving up, and having to be patient while you wait to advance, can prove to be too much for young players, especially those who have access to their parents’ credit card. And because it’s so addicting, having to wait for the next upgrade can be very hard.

The final verdict

Here’s our honest review: in so many ways, Clash of Clans is an awesome game with a lot to teach without being teachy, and we can totally see why it’s so popular, and so many people have downloaded.

Works well when you play alone, works even better when you’re with others. Clash of Clans is recommended for kids aged 13-17, and so if younger kids are playing, it’s best if they’re supervised, especially at the beginning.
